Mirroring the two major opening celebrations in 1990 join us in March 2015 for the Joan’s Community Celebration Day and in August for the 25th Anniversary Commemorative Concert.

In March 1990, hundreds of people from the local community were joined by parachutists, marching bands, dancers and local arts companies to celebrate the building’s public opening.

25 years later, on 28 March from 9am – 3pm The Joan invites the community to come along for a mega day of performing arts, including professional and community theatre and music performances, open workshops, circus and parkour demonstrations and exhibitions.

Here’s your chance to see a performance or two, have a go yourself, soak up the history and contribute creatively to the future of this great building.

The day will include a 2pm performance by celebrated Australian singers Archie Roach and Christine Anu – this show is expected to sell out so audiences should snap up tickets quickly – as well as three performances of White, by Scotland’s Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, one of the world’s best theatre companies for children. Tickets need to be bought for these performances and are all available on The Joan’s website www.thejoan.com.au

There will also be plenty of free entertainment, with a showcase of local performing arts talent from Penrith Conservatorium of Music, studioQ, Penrith Symphony Orchestra, Emu Heights Theatre Company and Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School. Special guests Team 9Lives, who’ve spearheaded parkour in Western Sydney (and who will be part of Monkey…Journey to the West, at The Joan in October), will perform displays of urban acrobatics on the lawns adjacent to the centre.

There will be fun activities all day for people of all ages, lots of free things to do and a great chance to learn more about your local creative hub. The Joan will be offering special one-day-deals on mini-subscriptions as well as a fabulous door prize for one lucky local. And, of course, what’s a celebration without a sausage sizzle? There’ll be one of those for sure!

At the Joan’s official opening in 1990 Joan Sutherland performed her last ever concert recital, accompanied by husband Richard Bonynge, to a packed house in the Concert Hall. 25 years later join us as we pay tribute to ‘La Stupenda’ in this elegant night of fine music, wine and canapés, joined by our very special guest Richard Bonynge himself.

The 25th Anniversary Concert will feature some of Australia’s most exquisite classical musicians including stunning vocal group The Song Company; one of Australia’s most acclaimed and recognised pianists Tamara Cislowska; and fittingly on a night honouring Dame Joan, the singer ‘touted as the next superstar of Opera’ Amelia Farrugia.

Joined on stage by the sublime strings of the Acacia Quartet and one of Australia’s principals harpists, and featuring a world premiere by Australia’s greatest living composer Elena Kats-Chernin, the 25th Anniversary Concert will be both a joyous concert of commemoration and an extraordinary night to remember.
