Blood on Silk: Fiona Davies

ANCIENT THREADS – TO FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES

Silk, the millennia-old, ancient textile thread, offers unexpected possibilities for innovative technological applications. The natural protein (fibroin) that composes silk is extracted and used as the starting point for a biocompatible material platform with utility in photonics and electronics, ranging from nanoscale optical lattices to metamaterials, and electronic components. The unusual and useful properties found in this material platform (polymorphic, biocompatible, all-water-processed, controllably degradable, edible, biologically active) allow for a combination of form and function, enabling a series of devices that bridge the biological and technological words.

BROADENING CREATIVITY

The late physicist, Dr Peter Domachuk, explored this familiar, biocompatible material, through the development of implantable biophotonic silk. These microchips were designed to provide a platform within the human bloodstream allowing the properties of blood cells to be determined or measured while those cells are still within the body. From 2009 until his death in 2012, Domachuk collaborated closely with Fiona Davies, on her Blood on Silk series of works. The two explored new ways of documenting and experiencing their own research from merging their different perspectives and ways of approaching creativity.

FIONA DAVIES

Blue Mountains-based artist, Fiona Davies holds a B.Sc (UNSW) and Bachelor of Visual Art (UWS), a MFA from Monash University, and is a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney.  Her works are multimedia installations encompassing both the real and simulated, and are exhibited nationally and internationally.

Davies’ current theoretical practice examines ideas of medicalised death and particularly, the almost domesticated rituals in an intensive care ward involved in taking daily samples of blood. This broad framework ranges from the material, culture and economics of silk and of blood, through to issues of surveillance and associated concerns about human rights.

The Peter Domachuk Memorial Lecture was established to honour and commemorate Dr Domachuk’s outstanding contribution and commitment to optofluidics and biophotonics research. The biennial lecture aims to attract the brightest minds and visionary thinkers in optical and experimental physics.
