No need to go all the way into Sydney! The Festival of Dangerous Ideas is coming to Penrith!

Sydney Opera House, in association with the Ethics Centre and The Joan, is live streaming two 2016 festival highlights, bringing some of the world’s leading thinkers to where you are to discuss and debate the important ideas of our time.

Beginning with Break a Rule a Day, best-selling author and journalist Lionel Shriver toys with the theory that a rule broken daily is better for your health than an apple. Then Annabel Crabb and David Marr will spark a no doubt hilarious debate in The Government We Deserve? off the back of the recent Federal election.

The Joan is hosting this satellite event and will facilitate a brief discussion panel following each live stream. Why not join in some healthy spontaneous discussion with refreshments in the foyer between the live streaming sessions too! Let’s start a conversation and continue talking.

Talk 1 – Break a Rule a Day – Lionel Shriver

When you’re on a bicycle at a red light with no car or pedestrian in sight, do you still wait for the green? Do you obey every single law? Surely fearful compliance with every niggling regulation defies the much-vaunted “freedom” that is the premise of democracy. Maybe that’s what drives our fascination with film and fiction criminality: we envy renegades. Is breaking a rule a day better than an apple for your health?

Talk 2 – The Government We Deserve? – Annabel Crabb and David Marr

Whichever way we vote, politicians say the electorate always gets it right at the ballot box. Cynics are more inclined to think that we get the government we deserve. Did we get it right this time? What does the election tell us about our faith in our political leaders? Are we a nation that can’t make up its mind?

Both talks will be Auslan signed
