Open Studio: Southlands Breakthrough Award

Thanks to the generous support of Southlands, in 2017 Penrith Performing & Visual Arts offered three $5000 Breakthrough Awards to Early Career Artists from Western Sydney. The awards are designed to support artists to take the next step in their professional development. The Open Studio is a chance to see a little of how their works have been developing.

The 2017 Breakthrough Artists are Aanisa VyletVictoria Garcia and Blush Opera.

The night will kick off with drinks and nibbles on the Q theatre stage, followed by a short presentation from each of the Breakthrough artists, and a brief discussion on creative practice in Western Sydney. The presentations will include:

  • An extract from the first draft of Aanisa Vylet’s new play, ‘The Woman’ inspired by her relationship with her mother.
  • A discussion with Victoria Garcia about her ambitious, immersive graphic installation, ‘Nature Palace.’
  • And three arias from the work ‘Chop Chef,’ an absurd take on the fusion of contemporary cooking and reality television by Blush Opera.

Afterwards there’ll be the opportunity to chat directly to the artists and hear how their projects have grown through the support of the Southlands Breakthrough Award.
