Penrith Strings

Penrith’s young musicians perform with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Penrith Symphony Orchestra

The first Penrith Strings concert will showcase the impressive talents of 27 young string players performing together with their tutors from the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Penrith Symphony Orchestra.

The performance will include music from Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings, Grieg’s Holberg Suite, a Concerto Grosso by Handel, and Josef Strauss’s popular Pizzicato Polka, with the students performing alongside their tutors.

Also featured in the concert are string quartet movements by Mozart and Shostakovich, which will be performed by a quartet of ACO musicians.

Penrith Strings is an exciting new orchestral training program for young string players, formed earlier this year through a partnership between the ACO, PSO and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, with support from the Crown Resorts Foundation’s Western Sydney Arts Initiative.

Now Penrith Strings takes centre stage for its first public performance, which will be the culmination of a three-day intensive residency led by visiting American violinist and teaching artist, Sharon Roffmann, herself a frequent guest artist with the ACO.

Also on show at the concert will be artworks by local primary students from Penrith Public School and St Marys North Public School. Both schools are currently participating in the ACO’s innovative Music and Art program, a multi-artform program delivered by Ms Roffman through video-conferencing and live in the classroom.
