From Tango to Mambo – Latin American Music for Two Pianos

Latin American music specialist, Daniel Rojas and acclaimed young pianist, Zubin Kanga, team up for a program full of passion, rhythm and colour

Latin American music specialist, Daniel Rojas and acclaimed young pianist, Zubin Kanga, team up for a program full of passion, rhythm and colour.

Gershwin’s Cuban Overture is full of Latin verve and memorable melodies. Two works by Tango-master, Astor Piazzolla – Libertango and Le Grand Tango – showcase the many facets of this sensuous dance, from slow and brooding to fast and passionate. Rojas’ new work, La Gran Salsa, is his own tribute to Piazzolla as well as to the high energy Afro-Cuban dance – featuring duelling virtuosity between the pianos. Finally, the suite from Leonard Bernstein’s beloved West Side Story showcases the most famous moments from the musical, including ‘Somewhere’, ‘Cool’ and the raucous ‘Mambo’, as you’ve never heard it before, in a new arrangement by both pianists!

London-based Australian pianist, Zubin Kanga is internationally renowned for his performances of contemporary music at prestigious events and venues around the world including the BBC Proms and several international festivals, as well as appearing as soloist with the London Sinfonietta, the Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.

“With fiery charm, sweeping fluency and intelligent concentration… Kanga is a bold and talented advocate for recent music, tackling its technical and conceptual challenges with audacity and tenacious cogency.” – Peter McCallum, Sydney Morning Herald

Daniel Rojas is a Chilean-born Australian concert pianist and highly acclaimed composer who specialises in the rich and vibrant Latin American musical aesthetic. Rojas’ interest in the music of various cultures has lead him to perform with classical and world music ensembles worldwide (such as Jacana, Tigramuna and the Great Bowing Company) as well as solo concerts in Australia, Asia, and South America.

“an outstanding album… stunning… Some of the most impressive moments come when Rojas unleashes his formidable improvisatory powers” (4 stars) – Limelight Magazine (Latin Piano Expressions)
